If you have a great story to tell but don’t have anyone to share it with, turn to Wattpad, a fun social writing platform that’s garnering over 10 million readers per month. It’s the world’s largest community for discovering and sharing stories, and now you can “Fan Fund” your work a la Kickstarter and reward your supporters on a tiered system that may include naming a character after them, influencing the plotline, or dinner with the writer.
Wattpad is free and allows you to discover thousands of new stories and follow your favorite authors chapter by chapter as the story unfolds. Reader feedback can influence the twists and turns of the story. Users can create reading lists, vote for their favorite authors and stories and share and socialize on the site. Fans can even create cover art and video trailers for stories they like.
Wattpad is available from your web browser and the Wattpad app for your phone or tablet. The company has already raised $21 million in two rounds of funding and seems to be on the fast track to the forefront of the e-publishing industry. One of the Toronto-based startups investors has described Wattpad as “the YouTube of writing,” because it allows unknown authors to share their work with a worldwide audience.
Look for Wattpad in your virtual webroom’s Nightstand at myWebRoom.com, where it will join other sites that will get you in the mood to write including LiveJournal, WordPress and Penzu.
